Pseudomonas Flashcards
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Culture
Typical odor (candy sweet) Blue-greenish pigmentation on certain media, especially on Mueller-Hinton medium = Pyocyanins and Pyocerdins
Pseudomonas aeruginosa Virulence Factors
Adhesion - fimbriae, non fimbrial adhesions and OMPs (affinity for mucin), flagella LPS (endotoxin) Exotoxins Biofilm Capsule (anti phagocytosis) Iron acquisition
Pseudomonas aeruginosa Pathogenesis
Secondary infections
Predisposing factors:
high infection pressure (drinking water)
humidity (fleece rot in sheep)
Colonization on damaged surface - adhesins
Tissue destruction - inflammation, exotoxins, pyocyanin
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cats and dogs
Skin infections - pyoderma Cystitis Otitis externa Purulent processes - pus can be blue-green Eye infections
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in hamster, guinea pig, chinchilla, mink
Pneumonia
Septicemia
High mortality
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in rabbit
Skin infection - moist dermatitis
In cleanest rabbitries - with automatic drinking water system; high use of disinfectants
Pneumonia (sporadic)
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in horses
- Metritis-vaginitis
secondary to prolonged antimicrobial treatment; contaminated semen - Keratitis conjunctivitis
secondary infection following topical treatment with steroids-antibiotic mixtures
Pseudomonas aeruginosa Mastitis
Bovines, sheep (also fleece rot), and Goats
Acute with high mortality
Origin: environment, teat injector, teat cleansing towel
Persistence in udder, even after treatment
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in reptiles
Necrotic stomatitis
Pneumonia
Septicemia
Secondary to poor housing
Pseudomonas aeruginosa in parrots and parrakeets (psittaciformes)
Secondary infection Conjunctivitis Rhinitis Pneumonia Airsacculitits Enteritis Origin - drinking water
Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Galliformes
Origin - water supply
In oviduct of turkeys
Contamination of eggs - exploding eggs (sulfur odor), neonatal mortality
Treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Take away the cause of infection - water supply
Most of the animals die (except otitis externa) even with treatment
