Pseudogout Flashcards
What is psuedogout?
Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD)
Discuss acute CPPD
Presents as acute monoarthropathy - knee, hip, wrist
Usually spontaneous and self limiting
Discuss chronic CPPD
Destructive changes like in OA
Can present as polyarthritis and thus look like RA
What are the risk factors for CPPD?
Age, OA< DM, hypothyroid, Hyperparathyroidism, hereditary haemochromotosis, wilsons disease
What investigations can be done for CPPD?
Polarised light microscopy
Xray
What would you expect to see under polarised light microscopy of CPPD?
Positively birefringent rhomboid shaped crystals
What may X-rays show in CPPD?
Soft tissue calcium deposition
What is the treatment for CPPD?
Analgesia
NSAIDs
Steroids
