What are some features of localised OA?
Pain and creps on movement, ache at rest
Worse with prolonged activity
Joints may gel/feel stiff after rest
Joints may feel unstable
When does OA feel worse?
On prolonged activity
Where does nodal/generalised OA normally present?
DIP, PIP, CMC joints and knees in post menopausal women
What bony swellings may be found in OA and where?
Heberdens at DIP
Bouchards at PIP
What are the signs of OA on Xray?
Loss of joint space
Osteophytes
Subarticular sclerosis
Subchondral cysts
What blood tests may be abnormal in OA?
CRP slightly raised
What are conservative treatments of OA?
Exercise to improve local muscle strength Weight loss Heat or cold packs Walking aids Stretching/manipulation TENS
What analgesia can be used in OA?
Paracetamol and topical NSAIDs
If ineffective use codeine or short term oral NSAID (+PPI)
Intra articular steroid injections
What are the surgical options for OA?
Joint replacement
