Speeches about objects?
Anything that is visible/tangible/stable in form. Can be moving parts or alive. E.g people, animals, engine, etc
What are the 4 types of informative speeches discussed in the chapter?
Speeches about: objects; processes; events; concepts
Speeches about processes?
Is a systematic series of actions that leads to a specific result or product. These speeches explain how something is made/done/works.
Two kinds of info. Speeches about process
-1.) to make the audience understand.
Just informing the audience
-2.) to give the audience the skills to perform.
You are actually teaching the audience.
Speeches about events?
A speech about anything that happens it is regarded as happening.
Speeches about concepts
These speeches include beliefs, theories, ideas, principles and the like
- Why must informative speakers be careful not to overestimate what the audience knows about the topic?
- How can you ensure your ideas don’t pass over the heads of your listeners?
- 1.)Because more than likely the audience will be vaguely knowledgeable and then you run the chance of being misunderstand
- .2) keep the language plain don’t use technical language
What should you do as an informative speaker to relate your topic directly to the audience?
Because if you don’t get and keep their interest they will drift off and won’t listen to your speech
What two things should you watch out for in making sure your speech is not overly technical?
Keep it clear and and straightforward
Avoid abstractions?
- Use description
- use comparisons
- use contrast
-personalize your ideas
To present one’s ideas in human terms that relate in some fashion to the experience of the audience.
Why is it important for informative speakers to be creative in thinking about ways to communicate their ideas
It helps keep the speech fresh, active, and the audience interested
