PRS03 - Lecture 8 - Insertion Flashcards
What do you need to examine prior to inserting the denture? (3)
Cast - 6 things and….
Sharp edges on acrylic work
Acrylic pearls (blobs) on fit surface
Acrylic resin covering the metal guide plans
Describe the clinical steps of insertion (9)
1) Adjust any areas that are likely to cause pain (i.e. acrylic pearls)
2) Gently insert the denture
3) If it doesnt seat properly (acrylic denture) - use occlude (denture:teeth) or pressure indicator paste (denture:soft tissue)
4) Once adjusted - you know its fully seated by checking: (5)
Teeth alignment and arch shape
Clasps, rest seats and guide planes are in right place (and engage)
Occlusion - check maximum ICP
Retention - does it rock, lift up (with tongue) or down (from palate), move with muscles in mouth (over-extention on the flanges)
Comfort - painful when biting (usually occlusal problem)
5) Check aesthetics (shouldve been confirmed at trial insertion)
6) Teach patient how to put on and take off (you show first)
7) Give OHI and tips on how to maintain denture
8) Arrange review appointment
Why would you never have a coblat-chrome denture that doesnt seat properly at insertion?
Because you already checked it at metal-framework try in
What happens if the patient doesnt like the appearance of it?
Go back to trial insertion
What OHI and tips would you give the patient? (7)
Clean over a sink (↓ risk of breaking)
Dont sleep with denture (↑ risk of denture stomatitis)
Dont soak in hot water (change shape of acrylic)
Know the specific cleaning solutions - avoid hypochorite for Co-Cr as it stains/corrodes metals
Brush teeth without denture
Brush dentures - 2/day using soap and soft bristle brush, after meals and being soaked in cleaning solution
Do not chew the denture tablet to clean denture
