Why were workers getting restless?
They had expected social reform after the abdication of the Tsar and were disappointed at the PGs failure to introduce it.
What were the July Days?
An explosion of frustration from peasants, workers, soldiers and sailors. They demonstrated in the streets, attacked and looted property, and seized railway stations and buildings.
Why was their unrest in the countryside?
. The peasants wanted to take back the land that they believed belonged to them.
. Peasants refused to agree to fixed grain prices and the PG sent in the army to requisition grain from them.
What happened to industry under the PG?
Food and raw material shortages, due to the war, led to factories closing and laying off workers. 568 factories closed in Petrograd between February and July.
What was the rate of unemployment like?
Due to factory closures, over 100,000 jobs were lost
What did the PG do in relation to the war?
They decided to continue participation in the war, creating a lot of opposition from the people
When was the Petrograd Soviet formed?
27th February 1917
What was “Soviet Order No.1”?
Stated that all decrees in regard to military affairs had to be approved by the Soviet. It gave the Soviet control of the army, making them more powerful than the PG.
