protozoa + fungi Flashcards
protozoa
- single celled, eukaryotic, animal-like
- usually lack cell walls
- heterotrophic
- grouped into 4 categories (amoebas, flagellates, ciliates, apicomplexa) based on how they move
mycology
study of fungi
mycosis
a disease caused by infection with a fungus
thallus
a plantlike vegetative body (as of algae, fungi, or mosses) that lacks differentiation into distinct parts (such as stem, leaves, and roots) and does not grow from an apical point; typical of algae, fungi, lichens, and some liverworts.
mycelium
the vegetative part of a fungus, consisting of a network of fine white filaments (hyphae)
hypha
each of the branching filaments that make up the mycelium of a fungus.
septate hyphae
have dividers between the cells, called septa (singular septum). The septa have openings called pores between the cells, to allow the flow of cytoplasm and nutrients throughout the mycelium.
aseptate (coenocytic)
one long cell that is not divided into compartments.
mold
a fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae.
