Protozoa Flashcards
Name 3 Protozoa of the oral cavity
- trichomonas tenax
- trichomonas vaginalis
- entamoeba gingivalis
Disease caused by trichomonas tenax
Broncho-pulmonary infections
Characteristics of trichomonas tenax infn x4
- associated with poor oral hygiene
- presence of mitochondrial, microaerotolerant flagellate
- saprophyte ie dead organic matter
- cysteine proteases and metalloproteases
Occurrence of trichomonas tenax
Malnourished
Immunodeficiency
2% in healthy individuals, 21% in periodontal disease
Treatment of trichomonas tenax
Metronidazole (single 2g oral dose/500mg twice daily for 7 days)
Treatment of trichomonas vaginalis
Metronidazole (single 2g oral dose/500mg twice daily for 7 days)
Disease caused by trichomonas vaginalis x6
- cervical neoplasia
- STDs
- atypical pelvic inflammatory disease
- infertility
- urethritis, prostitis, epididymitis
- cervical/prostate cancer
Disease caused by entamoeba Gingivalis
- progressive periodontal disease in immuno compromised
- pulmonary abscess
- acute osteomyelitis of the mandible
Characteristics of entamoeba Gingivalis infection x3
- presence of mitochondrial, micro-aerotolerant flagellate
- no mitochondria
- ingest microbes/leucocytes and dead organic matter
Occurrence of entamoeba Gingivalis
27-69% carriage in periodontal disease
0% in health
Characteristics of Protozoa x6
- Single celled eukaryotes
- lack cell wall
- compartmentalisation present
- mitochondria - present/absent
- chloroplasts present
- forms slime molds (many single cell organisms working tgt like a complex organism)
