Protozoa 1 Flashcards
Protozoa
- unicellular, eukaryotic organisms
- locomotion is accomplished by: pseudopodia, flagella, gliding movements-no locomotion organelle, cilia
- Classification based on mode of locomotion
Zoite
functional unit of protozoan development
Sporozoite
infective form found in a sporulated oocyst
Trophozoites
form which feeds and grows
Tachyzoites
form which divides rapidly
Bradyzoites
form which divides slowly
Asexual reproduction
- binary fission, budding, schizogony (merogony)
- protozoa that divide asexually have a short generation time
- Exponential increase in # of zoites
- destruction of host cells in proportion to the infection
- stops after a fixed number of repetitions
Merozoite
becomes either a Macrogametocytes & then a macrogamete OR microgametocyte & then several microgametes
When a microgamete fertilizes a macrogamete a ____ forms; then a wall forms around this and becomes an _____
zygote
oocyst
Eucoccidiorda
- parasites of epithelial cells
- sexual and asexual reproduction occurs in epithelial cells
Piroplasmorida
- parasites of blood cells
- ticks as vectors
- sexual reproduction takes place in ticks
Haemosporida
- parasites of blood cells
- biting insects as vectors
- sexual reproduction takes place in insects
Balantidium coli
- host
- ID
- pigs, rodents, primates, HUMANs
- Trophozoites and cysts
Balantidium coli
- site of infection
- pathogenesis/lesions/CS
- Large intestine
- mild to severe enteritis & dysentery in pigs and humans. Ulceration in humans
Balantidium coli
- Dx
- Tx/prevention
- usually cysts seen
- tetracyclines are effective
