Protists/ ratios Flashcards
What is a protist NOT
Animal, plant, or fungi
What is a volvox
Multicellular, can do photosynthesis (so it has a green color), moves by rolling around, has cilia
What’s an euglena?
It has an eye spot that’s sensitive to light, they have photosynthesis stuff in their eye, they swim frantically, they have a flagellum
What’s an amoeba?
They change shape to move, they move with pseudopods, have food vacuoles, can engulf their food to eat it
Is algae a protist?
YES
What’s a stentor
One of the LARGEST unicellular protozoans, main food source is algae, has a trumpet top that is rimmed with cilia, they CANNOT PHOTOSYNTHESIZE, and they’re clear!!!
What’s a paramecium
They’re COMPLETELY covered in cilia, moves very fast, has a contractile vacuole that gets excess water out of the cell
What’s a blepharisma?
Clear, HUGE, very slow, one side has cilia, has food vacuoles, changes shape easily
Protists have ________ just a group of cells
NO TISSUES
How do protists reproduce
Asexual, sexual or both
2 groups of protists
Phototroph-make their own food from sun
Organotroph- eat things for food
RATIO BETWEEN SURFACE AREA AND VOLUME IS IMPORTANT BC
As the ratio gets smaller, the cells functioning ability gets worse
How come the cells can’t function as well when the ratio is small
The cells have too much to control and can’t keep up with cell processes
What do cells do when their ratio gets too close together
They split
