Cell Review Flashcards
What makes up the ecosystem?
Abiotic and biotic organisms
What does biotic mean?
Alive
What does abiotic mean?
Not alive, one example is water. Even though abiotic things are not living, we still need to interact with them and they are necessary for life.
What makes up a community?
Divisions that include organisms that interact with each other
What are populations made up of?
Different species
What are organisms made up of?
1 cell or multiple cells
Order of earth’s hierarchy. (Largest to smallest)
Biosphere, ecosystem, community, populations, organisms
What is an organ system?
Group of organs working together to perform a specific function
What are organs made up of?
Specialized cells with a specific function
What are the 4 types of tissues?
Connective, nervous, epithelial, and muscle
What are examples of connective tissue?
Tendons, ligaments, and cartilage
What are examples of nervous tissue?
Brain and nerve cells
What are examples of epithelial tissue?
Coverings/linings: skin, etc.
Types of muscle tissue are…
Cardiac, smooth, skeletal
What are cells?
The structural & functional units of life
What is special about prokaryotic cells?
Can exist in a single form, very ancient, no nucleus, most likely has a flagellum.
What is special about eukaryotic cells?
Evolved from prokaryotic cells, has a nucleus, make up an organism, some of these cells have flagellum.
Where does glucose go to get converted into ATP?
The mitochondrion
What are organelles?
A membrane bound structure in a cell with a specific function. Ex: nucleus
What are molecules?
Clusters of atoms held together through bonding. Ex: DNA
What are atoms?
A single unit of an element. Ex: protons, neutrons, electrons
The more _____ the organism, the more ______ it’s cells are.
Complex, complex
What do light microscopes allow you to do?
Look at cells while they’re alive
What do electron microscopes require?
The cells must be dead that you are looking at.
What is a benefit of an electron microscope?
The image of the cells is extremely high quality.
What is a nucleus membrane similar to?
A cell membrane
What is passive transport?
When a substance moves through the cell membrane and it does not take any energy to do so
What is active transport?
When a substance moves through the cell membrane and it does take energy to do so
What does the endoplasmic reticulum do?
It transports proteins
What does the mitochondria do?
Produces energy from food
What do ribosomes do for a cell?
They produce complex proteins
What is one characteristic of the cell membrane?
It is semi permeable
What does studying how cells work on the inside help?
It helps finding cures for diseases such as HIV and Lymes disease
What contains all the ecosystems?
The biosphere
