Protists And Parasites Flashcards
Sporozoans
Cilia- causes malaria. Complex lifecycle which relies on a certain species of mosquito to be spread
Sacrodinians
Pseudopodea - closely related to the common harmless pond amoeba. Spread through contaminated food and water.
E.g. Entamoeba
What is a Vector
A vector transports a parasite from one organism to another.
Ectoparasite attachment features
Attach to the external surface of the host. Use hooks and suckers for mechanical attachment. Plant ectoparasites use haustoria, root like structures to attach and tap into the host nutrients.
E.g. Fluke worm
The life cycle of parasites
The primary host carries the adult parasite.
The secondary or intermediate host carries the larval stages.
E.g. Malaria, primary host - mammal, secondary host - mosquito
Flagellates
A flagellated organism is easily recognised in the blood of the host. Transmitted by the tsetse fly between hosts. E.g. Trypansomnia
