Immunisation And Vaccines Flashcards
Immunisation - primary response
Your primary response is slow as your helper T cells had to find the correct B cell to clone and produce antibodies.
Immunisation - secondary response
Your secondary response is much faster and greater due to the presence of memory B cells.
What is the role of vaccines?
The role is to activate B and T lymphocytes to generate antibodies and and memory B cells. They contain a foreign antigen and come in three main types.
Inactive vaccine
The pathogen is dead and therefore can’t invade/reproduce
Attenuated vaccine
The pathogen is living but can’t invade/reproduce
Adjuvants vaccine
Additional Subunits/toxins from the pathogen that increase the effectiveness of the vaccine
What is herd immunity?
Herd immunity is when most of the population is immune, which limits outbreaks because there are too few susceptible individuals to support an epidemic.
