Protists Flashcards
Protists
Are eukaryotic (have true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles). Are mostly unicellular and are often found in watery environments
Protazoans / ANIMAL LIKE
- heterotrophs
- unicellular
- no cell wall (like animal cells)
- ohagocytes
Sarcodines
Feed using pseudopods (temp bulging extensions of cell used to capture and engulf food)
Have contractile vacuole - structure that collects and expels extra water
eg. ameoba
Ciliates
Protists that use cilia to move in a wavelike motion. Sweeps food to the ciliates
Flagellates
Protists use flagella to move / for locomotion
Parasites
Protists that feed on cells and bodily fluids of the host
PLANT LIKE
- autotrophic
- unicellular and multicellular
- Algae
- very NB in oxygen production
- most live in water
- all contain chlorophyll and photosynthesize
- Diatoms
- unicellular organism
- glass like cell walls and float on the surface of lakes and oceans
- used in insecticides + household scouring products
- Dinoflagellates
- unicellular algae surrounded by stiff plates
- variety of colours
- have two flagella
- responsible for red tides / algal blooms
- Euglenoids
- green unicellular algae found in freshwater
- can be autotrophs or heterotrophs
- use flagella to move
- Red algae
- multi cellular seaweed
- only needs small amount of sunlight (found deep in ocean)
- used in hair conditioner and ice cream
- Green algae
- contains green pigments
- unicellular, multicellular or colonial
- closely related to plants
- Brown algae
- seaweed with many pigments + plant-like structures
FUNGUS LIKE
- heterotrophs
- cells walls
- use spores to reproduce
Spores
Tiny cell that can grow into new organism
Slime mould
brightly coloured, found in moist and shady places, vary in size
Water moulds and mildew
Most live in water, frow in tiny threads, responsible for potato famine
