Fungi (moulds) Flashcards

1
Q

Fungi

A

Can be unicellular (Eg yeast) or multicellular (eg mould)

All eukaryotic and have cell walls made of chitin

Heterotrophic - are saprophytic (bread mould and mushrooms) or parasitic (athletes foot or thrush)

Q

Structure

A

Hyphae: branched filaments. Each hyphae contains cystoplasm and lots of nuclei. Hyphae are called coenocytes

  1. Runners / stolons - hyphae that branch horizontally on surface of substrate
  2. Rhizoids - branches of stolon that penetrate the substrate and anchor the mycelium
  3. Sporangiosphore - hyphae that grow up vertically and develop sporangia on their tips to produce spores
