Fungi (moulds) Flashcards
1
Q
Fungi
A
Can be unicellular (Eg yeast) or multicellular (eg mould)
All eukaryotic and have cell walls made of chitin
Heterotrophic - are saprophytic (bread mould and mushrooms) or parasitic (athletes foot or thrush)
2
Q
Unicellular fungi
A
Reproduce by binary fission
3
Q
Multicellular
A
Reproduce sexually by gametes or asexually by spores
4
Q
Structure
A
Hyphae: branched filaments. Each hyphae contains cystoplasm and lots of nuclei. Hyphae are called coenocytes
- Runners / stolons - hyphae that branch horizontally on surface of substrate
- Rhizoids - branches of stolon that penetrate the substrate and anchor the mycelium
- Sporangiosphore - hyphae that grow up vertically and develop sporangia on their tips to produce spores
5
Q
Coenocytes
A
Cell / part of organism that has many nuclei in a common cytoplasm without any cell walls
