Protists Flashcards
Trophy (nutritional)
1) phagotrophy - consume other cells/ dead cells
2) saprotrophy _ absorbing organic matter
3) phototrophy - generating energy from light
4) symbiosis- mutualism, commensalism parasitism
General
Protozoa - animal like
Algae - plant like
Fungus like species
All protists are aquatic environment
Protozoa
Heterotrophic single cell; phagotrophic
Trophozoites - motile and active feeding stage
Cyst - dormant period
Trophozoites to cyst = encystment
Cyst to trophozoite =excystment
Can go through sexual / asexual reproduction
Binary fission, budding, schizogony
Cystostome
Protozoa have specialized structure for phagocytosis
Amoebozoa
1) entamoeba histolytica-amoebic dysentery
2) acanthamoeba -keratitis (corneal inflammation)
3) naegleria Fowleri - brain eating amoeba
4) slime mods-
→ cellular slime mold - single ameboid cells
→ plasmodiad slime mold _ large multinucleate
Chromalveolata
1) apicomplexans- parasitic: apical complex used to enter host
→ plasmodium-malaria
→ toxoplasma gondii - cat infection, can occur in humans
→Cryptosporidium - diarrhea with cysts in water
2) ciliates -
→ batantidium coli - the only human parasite
→ paramecium - mate with cytostome and cytoproet
→ stentor - trumpet shaped, non-motile
3) oomycetes - cell wall of cellulose
- most members are plant pathogens
Excavate
Cavity, complex cell shapes
1) diplomonads - two non identical haploid nuclei, giardia - diarrhea
2) parabasalids- endosymbiants, undulating membrane fin-like structure
3) euglenozoans - eyespot, two flagella’s
→Trypanosoma African sleeping sickness and chagas disease
