Proteobateria Flashcards
Alphaproteobacteria
Rickettsia rickettsii - ticks - Rocky Mountain spotted fever
Rickettsia prowazekii - lice - epidemic typhus
Rickettsia typhus - flea - endemic typhus
Agrobacterium tumefaciens - plant pathogen - tumors
Rhizobium - nitrogen fixation
Betaproteobacteria
Fastidious; harder to grow in culture medium
Neisseria gonorrohoea - gonorrhea
Neisseria meningitidis x meningitis
Bordetella pertusis - whopping cough
Gammaproteobacteria
Biggest diversity of gram negative
Haemophilus influenzae - respiratory infections.
Vibrio cholera - cholera
Vibrio vulnificus - cellulitis
Pseudomonas aeroginosa - highly motile, hard to treat as they form biofilms
Aliivibrio fischeri - squid bioluminescence
Legionella pneumophila - Legionnaires disease
Deltaproteobacteria
Have sulphur as the final electron acceptor
Anaerobic
Desulfovibrio orale - periodontal disease
Bdellovibrio - parasitic to other bacteria
Myxobacteria - makes fruiting bodies when nutrients are poor in soil
Epsilonproteobacteria
Second smallest class
Microaerophillic - need only little bit of oxygen more might be harmful or even lethal
Campylobacter jejuni - food poisoning - feces and chicken guy
Helicobacter pylori - ulcers in some people, present in human gut
Zetaproteobacteria
Only one member in the class
Mariprofundus Ferroxydan - marine iron oxidizing bacteria
Enteric bacteria (gut bacteria)
Found in gammaproteobacteria class
Can be coliforms or non-coliforms
Facultative anaerobes
E. Coli - mostly symbiotic but some are pathogenic because of shiga protein production
Salmonella typhi - typhoid
Yersinia pestis - black death or bubonic plague
