Protestant Reformation
Martin Luther’s idealism put a split in the church. Those who protested against the Catholic Church became known as protestants. Sparking the Protestant Reformation.
Martin Luther
The man who wanted to see reforms in the church was Martin Luther. Martin Luther was a priest who devoted his life to the church after god saved his life. As a priest, he spent much of his time reading and interpreting the Bible. He began to question some of the practices of the church.
95 Theses
Martin Luthor nailed his list of demands to the local church door in. This list was known as the Ninety-Five Theses because it listed ninety-five complaints.
Catholic Reformation
Catholic leaders knew changes had to be to stop the spread of Luthor’s ideas. This movement was known as the Catholic Reformation.
Indulgences
An indulgence was a document given by the pope that forgave a person from the consequences of the sins he or she committed. Many Christians began to view this as a way for people to buy their way to heaven.
