Proteins & enzymes Flashcards
What are proteins built with?
Amino acids
What are the four levels of protein structure?
Primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary
Define what an enzyme is
Enzymes are proteins which act as biological catalysts and speed up the rate of reaction by lowering the activation energy. Every enzyme will only react with a specific molecule called a substrate which binds to a region of the enzyme called the active site.
How does a competitive inhibitor work?
A competitive inhibitor binds with the active site of an enzyme, forming an enzyme-inhibitor complex, and resulting in the substrate being unable to bond with the enzyme.
what is a zwitterion?
A zwitterion is an ion that contains two functional groups. In simple terms, it is an ion possessing both positive and negative electrical charges.
Why are enzymes commonly not effective in acidic conditions?
acids change the charges on the enzymes
