Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins composed of?
20 different amino acids
Where are proteins found in?
meat, seafood, milk, eggs
How many amino acids can the cell make?
12 out of 20
What are the two classifications of amino acids?
Non essential
Essential
What are non essential amino acids?
amino acids that the body can make
What are essential amino acids?
Amino acids we get from our diet
What happens to proteins if we don’t get all 20 amino acids at the same time?
Normal protein synthesis can’t happen
What are complete proteins?
Protein that have all the amino essential amino acids (meat, eggs)
What are incomplete proteins?
Lack on or more of the essential amino acids (vegetables)
What is the process of new synthesize of proteins
Dietary protein are digested and broken down into amino acids which are transported to the blood cells. Used to synthesize new proteins
What are the new proteins?
are enzymes which control our metabolic rate, clotting factors etc
How can proteins supply energy?
From amino acids that are produced through the digestive process
What are deaminated amino acids?
Amino acids that lose their nitrogen group and react and form urea which excreted in the urine
What do proteins requirement vary depend on
body size, metabolic rate and activity level
