Lipids Flashcards
(23 cards)
What are lipids?
fats, oils, phospholipids and cholesterol
What are the most common form of lipids?
In our diet are triglyceride
What do lipids provide?
energy for cellular processes
What are lipids essential for?
the building of structures such as the cell membrane
What are the 3 main types of fats we get our lipid sources?
Saturated, unsaturated and monosaturated fats
Where are saturated fats found?
In foods of animals (meat, milk and dairy products)
Where are unsaturated fats found?
Seed, nuts and plant oils
Where are monosaturated fats found?
In olive, peanut, canola oils
What is the healthies fat for us?
Monosaturated
What fat in excess can give rise to cardiovascular disease?
Saturated fats
Where is cholesterol found
in liver and egg yolk
What are the products of the breakdown of triglyceride?
Fatty acids and glycerol
What are fatty acids and glycerol transported by?
lymph to the blood and onto tissues
What can the liver convert?
Fatty acids from one form to another
What are essential fatty acids?
fatty acids which must be obtained from our diet
Linoleic acid essential for cell membrane
What does the liver regulate?
Our circulating lipids as triglyceride, phospholipids and lipoproteins
What are the two classifications of lipoproteins?
Very low density lipoproteins
High density lipoproteins
What is the classification of lipoproteins dependent on?
The levels of lipids in the lipoprotein
What is the classification if have high number of lipids?
Lower density
What does the liver control in the body?
Cholesterol
What is the process of the removal of cholesterol
removed and excreted into the bile
What is cholesterol used to produce?
Bile salts
What is cholesterol used to construct?
Cell and organelle membrane
Production of some sex and adrenal cortex hormones
