Proteins Flashcards
What is the primary structure of proteins?
a single polymer chain that is a sequence of amino acids
What is the secondary structure of proteins?
three-dimensional structure - folded single polymer chains
What is the tertiary structure of proteins?
Again a single chain polymer chain but it has interactions with different parts of it (e.g. covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds) and R groups (side groups)
What is the quaternary structure of proteins?
it is made up of multiple polypeptide chains
it can be tetramer, hexamer and fibrous
What structure does haemoglobin have? and what is its function?
Quaternary, it transports oxygen
What structure does actin have? and what is its function?
Quaternary and actin facilitates the movement of cells and also makes up part of the cytoskeleton
What structure does integrin have? and what is its function?
Integrin is a transmembrane protein that is quaternary and attaches to actin within the cell. it forms the focal adhesions that also facilitate the movement of a cell along the ECM
What structure does fibrin have? and what is its function?
Quaternary structure, most important protein in blood clotting
How do we classify proteins?
proteins can be polar, non-polar or charged
