Proteins Flashcards
How do you test for proteins?
Add buiret solution (alkali n copper sulfate)
Should turn violet colour.
What are fibrous proteins used for and how are they suited?
Skin, hair, and nails. They contains a-keratin so they are v strong.
They also contains a-collagen which is the main component in connective tissue.
They are used for structural support as they have long fibres.
What does conjugated mean?
'’Attached to another chemical group by covalent bonding.’’
What are conjugated proteins used for?
Catalase (enzyme); it catalyses the decomposition of hydrogen.
What are conjugated proteins made of?
Simple proteins combined by a ‘‘prosthetic group’’ or ‘‘cofactor’’.
Describe haemoglobin.
Can carry up to 4 oxygen molecules.
Transports oxygen by binding to it in red blood cells (from lungs to body).
What are globular proteins used for?
Insulin.
Describe the structure of a globular protein.
Particular proteins are folded in the same way; compact because of these folds.
What are the two different functions of a-helix and b-helix?
a-helix: haemoglobin
b-helix (pleated): antibodies, ‘‘immunoglobin’’.
Which proteins are soluble in water and which aren’t?
Globular and conjugated are soluble. Fibrous aren’t.
Name two examples of globular proteins.
Insulin and haemoglobin.
Name two examples of conjugated proteins.
Haemoglobin and catalase.
Name two examples of fibrous proteins.
Keratin, elastin, and collagen.
What are protease enzymes used for?
Breaking down amino acid (protein) chains.
Which organelle produces proteins.
Ribosomes on the RER make amino acid chains from the information copied by mRNA.
