Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins made up of?
Amino acids
What 3 components make up amino acids?
Amino group, carboxyl group and R group
What’s the reaction and bonds called when water is removed from amino acids?
Condensation reaction
Peptide bonds
What’s the difference between dipeptides and polypeptides?
Dipeptides > 2 amino acids
Polypeptided > 3 or more amino acids
What is the primary structure?
Sequence of amino acids in a protein
What is the secondary structure?
Chain of amino acids (2D)
What is the tertiary structure?
3D folding of secondary structure into complex shape. Shape dependant on bonds.
What is the Quaternary structure?
3D arrangement of polypeptides
What are the 4 structures of a protein?
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary
Quaternary
What are the 2 types of proteins?
Fibrous and Globular
Describe globular proteins
Tertiary/Quaternary structures
Hydrophilic (soluble) groups on outside
Are folded into compact shapes
Fold into spherical 3D shape
What are some examples of globular proteins?
Insulin
Haemoglobin
Enzymes
Describe fibrous proteins.
Little/no tertiary structures
Hydrophobic (insoluble)
Long parallel chains
What are some examples of fibrous proteins?
Collagen
Keratin
