Lipids Flashcards
What are lipids?
Waterproof biological molecules
What are the 2 types of lipids?
Saturated and Unsaturated Lipids
Describe Saturated Lipids
Saturated lipids are animal fats. They are made up of single bonded carbons which means that it has no kinks and is straight. Compact.
Describe Unsaturated Lipids.
Unsaturated Lipids are plant oils. They have double bonded carbons, resulting in more kinks. Not compact.
Why do Unsaturated Lipids have a lower melting point?
Unsaturated Lipids have a much lower melting point because of the weaker intermolecular forces caused by the double bonded carbons reducing strength. The more kinks mean that it cannot be compacted close together.
What are lipids in water?
Non- polar and insoluble. (Oil and water don’t mix easily)
Describe HDL
‘Good’ cholesterol
Decreases blood cholesterol level
Transports cholesterol from body tissues to the liver
Includes Unsaturated Lipids, proteins and cholesterol.
Describe LDL
‘Bad’ cholesterol
Increases cholesterol level
Transports cholesterol from the liver to the blood
Includes Saturated Lipids, proteins and cholesterol
What components make up a triglyceride?
Glycerol and 3x fatty acids
How is water removed from a triglyceride?
Through a condensation reaction (ester bond)
