Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins?
made of C,H,O,N
structure determines its function
polymers of amino acids (formed by multiple amino)
amino acids
monomer subunit of proteins
made up of: amino group (nh2), carboxyl (cooh), hydrogen & r group
20 diff r groups 8 are essential to humans
Peptides
peptide bond is a covalent bond formed by dehydration synthesis
peptide is bond between amino acids
polypeptide means more than 50
types of protein
structural: frame support
defensive: infection fighters
signal: messenger
carrier: transport of materials
recognition: cellular markers
enzyme: catalyst
motile: movement
Primary (Structure)
linear sequence of amino acids
change could alter or destroy function
Secondary (structure)
coils/foileds that contribute to shape
results from hydrogen bonding
common structures: beta-pleated & alpha-helix
Tertiary Structure
three dimensional shape due to range of interactions among r groups
interactions include hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions & disulfide bridges
critical to function
Quaternary (structure)
forms subunits & exists in many structures
denaturation
loss of both structure and function of protein
protein prosthetic groups
non-protein components
structure & function relationship
long & linear: provides strength
compact & globular: good for transport
