Protein Synthesis And RNA Flashcards
Triplet
A group of three successive nucleotides in a gene
Protein synthesis allows…
Cells to generate new proteins that are responsible for maintaining our cells structure and function.
Where does protein synthesis occur?
Ribosomes (found outside nucleus in cells cytoplasm)
How do cells transport genetic information from nucleus to ribosomes without damage?
They copy the DNA and use an RNA molecule to carry the code to the ribosome.
What are RNA molecules
Ribonucleic acids, they are single stranded and consist of a smaller strand of nucleotides to DNA
What three parts make up each nucleotide in DNA?
A deoxyribose sugar, a phosphate group and one of four nitrogen bases.
Differences between RNA and DNA:
RNA is single stranded, ribonucleic acid, Uracil replaces thymine and it has a ribose sugar rather than a deoxyribose sugar
DNA is double stranded, deoxyribonucleic acid, it has a deoxyribose sugar
Three forms of RNA:
mRNA: carries a copy of DNA to the ribosomes.
tRNA: carries amino acids to ribosomes.
rRNA: helps to make up the ribosomes that are the site of protein synthesis
