Mutations And Mutagens Flashcards
Mutation
Permanent change in the base sequence of dna
Spontaneous mutations
Arise naturally mainly from errors in dna replication
Induced mutations
Caused by mutagens
Mutagens
Environment factors that, when exposed to cells, can alter the genetic material of an organism.
Three categories of mutagens:
Radiation, chemical compounds, and viruses
Radiation mutagens…
Cause two dna strands to break which results in loss of nitrogenous bases,
Cross linking
Strong bonds form between nitrogenous bases on opposite DNA strands or adjacent to each other. Dna will be unable to unwind. Cell will eventually die (no photosynthesis)
How do viruses invade healthy cells?
They integrate their genome with the dna of the host cell so it is passed to new cells.
