Q

How does gel electrophoresis separate proteins?

A

It uses current flowing through a buffer to separate proteins. The gel acts as a sieve, separating the proteins.

Q

What happens during SDS-PAGE?

A

The proteins are denatured and given a uniform negative charge; this means that the proteins can be separated based on their size as they migrate towards the positive electrode. Small proteins travel further through the gel than large proteins

Q

What is different if you use a native gel?

A

The protein is not denatured before hand. This allows proteins to be analysed in their folded state
