Protein Flashcards
R Group
Variable Groups on Amino Acids
Two main groups in amino Acids
Amine Group
Carboxyl Group
How many Amino Acids occur naturally
20
Bond between amino acids
Peptide bond
Polypeptide
Chains of three or more amino acids
Terminals
Ends of the chain.
One side is the amine terminal and the other side is the carboxyl terminal.
Primary Structure
Sequence of how the amino acids are joined together.
Secondary Structure
The N-H and C=O interact via hydrogen bonds:
allowing to coil up into an alpha helix
allowing to lie parallel to one another into beta pleated sheets.
Depends on 1o
Tertiary Structure
Folding of proteins into its final shape.
Dependent on R group of Amino Acids
Bonds formed in Tertiary structure
Hydrophobic/Hydrophilic interactions
Hydrogen Bonds
Ionic Bonds
Disulphide bridges
Quaternary Structure
Two or more individual proteins called subunits interacting with one another.
Similar to 3o but individual proteins rather than one single protein
Haemoglobin
Required for oxygen transport.
Contains 4 subunits: 2 alpha and 2 beta
Globular proteins
Spherical, water-soluble proteins eg. enzymes
Fibrous proteins
Long, insoluble structural proteins.
Prosthetic Group
Non-protein component of a conjugated protein.
