Lipid Flashcards
Elements in Lipid
CHO
Macromolecule
Large complex molecules with a large molecular weight.
Types of Lipids
Triglycerides
Cholesterol
Phospholipids
Saturated fats
Fatty acid chains that contain no double bonds between adjacent carbon atoms.
Packed closely so forms solid
Monosaturated fats
Fatty acid chains that contain one double bond between two adjacent carbon atoms.
Cannot be as closely packed so forms liquid
Polysaturated fats
Fatty acid chains that contain two or more double bods between adjacent carbon atoms.
Cannot be as closely packed so forms liquid
Correlation of MP of a Fatty Acid chain
The larger the fatty acid chain, the greater the melting point as more energy would be needed to break the intermolecular forces between fatty acid chains.
Where are Saturated fats found?
Non-fish animals
Unsaturated fats found in?
Fish and plants.
Structure of Phospholipids
Hydrophilic phosphide heads and two Hydrophobic fatty acid tails.
Simple Molecules of a Triglyceride
Fatty Acids and Glyerol
Name of the Bond in a Triglyceride
Ester Bond
Number of molecules of water formed in a condensation reaction of a Trigkyceride
Three
In a digestion of a fat, the pH…
Decreases as fatty acids are formed which are acidic in nature.
Sterols
Steroid alcohols based on a four carbon ring structure.
Contain a hydroxyl group.
OH group hydrophilic, rest hydrophobic.
