PROTEIN Flashcards
primary function
growth, repair maintenance of body cells and tissue
secondary function
if someone doesn’t have enough carbs or fat then protein will provide them with the energy to keep them alive
babies and children need a lot because…
they are growing rapidly
adolescents need a lot because..
growth and repair
secondary source of energy to keep up with growth spurts and high levels of physical activity
male adolescents have more muscle mass so they need more protein
pregnant women because..
growth of baby and repair and maintenance of body cells and tissue before and after pregnancy
nursing mothers because..
so her milk has enough protein for her new baby
proteins are made up of…
amino acids
IAAs and what do they do
indispensable amino acids. they MUST be included in the diet. 10 IAAs are required by children and 8 by adults. the rest are called dispensable amino acids because they aren’t necessary in the diet as they can be made in the diet
what are HBV protein foods and what do they do
high biological value protein foods supply all the IAAs in the quantities required by the body. animal foods
give 4 examples of HBV foods
meat
fish
poultry
eggs
what are LBV protein foods
low biological value protein foods which lack one or more of the IAAs. generally they are plant foods
give 5 examples of LBV foods
pasta nuts wheat flour pulses bread
what is the only plant food that is HBV
soya
what is protein complementation
when a LBV food is eaten with a protein food containing the missing amino acid. the other food could be another LBV food or it could be a HBV food
was is the missing amino acid called
the limiting amino acid
