diabetes Flashcards
what does the body produce during digestion
glucose
what does glucose do
absorb into the blood stream and is carried around the body to where it is needed for energy
what does insulin do
helps glucose enter the cells and as this happens the level of sugar in the blood goes down
what is diabetes
a condition where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high. this is because:
either the body doesn’t produce enough insulin
or the insulin that the body produces doesn’t work properly
what is type 1 diabetes
the body cant make any insulin. more common in children, adolescents and young adults.
AKA insulin dependant diabetes
what is type 2 diabetes
not enough insulin is produced or the insulin produced doesn’t work properly. tends to develop gradually as people get older- usually after 40 (related to diet and lifestyle eg obesity)
AKA non insulin dependant diabetes
