coronary heart disease Flashcards
when does it occur
when one or more of the coronary arteries is narrowed or completely blocked by a build up of fatty deposits on its walls. restricts blood flow through the arteries and causes damage to the heart muscle. the heart has to work much harder to pump blood around the body
what happens when the arteries become narrowed
the heart has to work much harder to pump blood around the body
what happens when the artery is completely blocked
blood cannot flow to the heart and a heart attack can occur
other factors that increase risk of CHD
older age
how to decrease risk of developing CHD
making changes to your diet and lifestyle
diet factors that may contribute to development of CHD
hbp too much fat too much salt obesity too much alcohol
lifestyle factors that may contribute to development of CHD
lack of physical activity
smoking
diabetes
how does too much fat increase CHD risk
can increase blood cholesterol levels.
how does too much salt increase CHD risk
increase blood pressure levels
how does obesity increase CHD risk
increases a persons risk of developing several serious and possibly life threatening medical conditions like CHD and diabetes
how does too much alcohol increase CHD risk
damages heart muscle
increase blood pressure
leads to weight gain (has a lot of calories)
how does lack of physical activity increase CHD risk
heart doesn’t get the exercise it needs to ensure proper function
how does smoking increase CHD risk
doubles chance of heart attack
damages lining of arteries-so fatty deposits build up there
carbon monoxide reduces amount of oxygen blood can carry to heart and around body
nicotine stimulates body to make adrenalin which makes the heart beat faster-raises blood pressure
makes blood more likely to clot
how does diabetes increase CHD risk
high blood sugar levels affect artery walls
increases likelihood of high cholesterol and hbp
