How is MARASMUS CAUSED?
By a lack of PROTEIN and ENERGY in the diet. Affects both adults and children.
SYMPTOMS of MARASMUS:
- Old man face
- Skin hangs from the body
- Skin and bone
How can MARASMUS be treated?
- High protein diet
- Plenty of fluids
- Vit & min supplements
How is KWASHIORKOR caused?
- Baby is weaned from breast milk onto protein pot foods
* In 3rd world countries high protein foods can be hard to acquire
Who does it affect?
• common in Africa, Asia, South America (great poverty)
What are the SYMPTOMS of KWASHIORKOR?
- Pot belly
- Loss of muscle mass
- Red inflamed patches of skin
How can KWASHIORKOR be treated?
- Small amounts of milk
- Vit & min supplements
- Once ODEMA has reduced High calorie diets can be introduced
Complications of KWASHIORKOR:
If developed before 2yrs stunted growth can occur
What is PEM?
Protein energy malnutrition
Deaths due to PEM?
49% of deaths in 0-5yrs on developing countries are caused by PEM
EXCESS protein?
- Surplus of ENERGY
- Demineralisation of BONES
- Deterioration of KIDNEYS for those with the disease
