What is Obesity?
A
- Excessive fat accumulation in tissue that impairs health
- BMI above 30
- In 2014 58% of women in UK were overweight
- in 2014 65% of men in UKwere overweight

What are the CAUSES of Obesity?
A
- Positive energy imbalance (weight gain)
- Less physically demanding jobs = less energy output
- Increase in car ownership as people have to travel further to work
- Larger portions
- Habits affect offspring
- Increase leisure time
- Consumption of ready meals/ fast foods/ fizzy drinks (HIGH ENERGY FOODS)

What is the impact of obesity on our health?
A
- Gall bladder diseases
- Cancer
- Shorter life expectancy
- Type 2 diabetes
- CHD
- Stroke
- High energy foods eaten by obese people often contain lots of LDL which transports cholesterol around the body and deposit it on artery walls thus increasing blood pressure
- BMI above 30 puts you at risk of High cholesterol levels

How is Obesity measured?
A
- BMI compares wi=eight & height Weight kg decided by Height m squared - 0-18.4 = underweight - 18.5-24.9 = ideal - 25-29.9 = overweight - 30-39.9 = obese - 40+ = v obese

How is Obesity managed?
A
- Sit down at meal times
- Reduce snacking
- Choose low fat options
- Less alcohol
- Avoid foods coked in fat
- Eat lower calorie foods
- Energy intake reduced by 1000kcals a day
- 30mins of exercise a day
- Stored kcals have to be used up to loose wight - No more than 1kg of weight loss a week
- No 2nd servings

How does one become Underweight?
A
- Lack of energy can result in MALNUTRITION & STARVATION
- Psychological = eating disorders
= suppressive drugs
= laxatives
= bulimia
= anorexia nervosa
= malnourishment

What is the BMI or an underweight person?
A
- 0-18.4 = underweight
- 0-17.5 = anorexic
