Protection Flashcards
Dental Image Regulations
ADA, FDA
Filtration
removes low energy, less penetrating, longer wavelength x-rays
Inherent Filtration
when x-ray passes through glass window (not enough, additional filtration required)
Aluminum Disks
additional filtration located between collimator and tubehead
Total Filtration
sum of inherent and added filtration, regulated by state/federal law
Machines below 70kVp
require 1.5mm aluminium filtration
Machines above 70kVp
require 2.5mm aluminum filtration
Collimation
restricts size/shape of beam; diameter restricted to 2.75 inches at patients skin
Lead Apron
state law requires use; minimum thickness .25mm
F-Speed
if using film, the faster the speed the less radiation/exposure
Other protectors
PID, film holding devices (RINN), lead aprons/collars, digital vs film, film handling, perscribed radiographs (risk/benefit)
Maximum Permissible Dose
[MPD]; occupational = 50mSv or 5.0rem /year; non-occupational = 1mSv or .1rem / year
NCRP
National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements - published MPD standards
ALARA
“As Low As Reasonably Achievable”
Cumulative Occupational Dose
workers age x 10mSv
