Often affects young men or any age; older men with catheters; Sx: abrupt onset of urinary urgency, burning and painful micturtition, hematuria, fever, chills, perineal and back pain, lower abdominal fullness, pain; malaise, body ache.
Acute Bacterial Prostatitis
Often asymptomatic; pelvic and perineal distention and pain
Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis
Sx like bacterial, no bacteria present
Chronic Non-Bacterial Prostatitis
Chronic pelvic pain, perineal distention, pain; obstructive voiding, sexual dysfunction; but no evidence of either bacterial or inflammatory involvement
Chronic Non-Bacterial Non-inflammatory Prostatitis
a nonmalignant enlargement of the prostate due to excessive growth of prostatic tissue with aging, may not involve pain at all.
Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH
Acute pain on urination, frequency, urgency, urinary difficulty, pain in the genitalia radiating to groin, sticky yellow discharge
T: Red with sticky coat on root
P: Slippery, rapid

DAMP HEAT WITH TOXIC HEAT
TX: Resolve damp and toxic heat, invigorate blood, eliminate stasis

TX: Regulate Qi, Blood and Essence, remove obstructions from Connecting channels

- Non-malignant increase in growth of the prostate.
- 90% of men in 80’s have prostate hyperplasia at autopsy; begins in mid 40’s, progresses slowly; significant cause of urinary Sx in aging men
- Untreated, complete urinary obstruction
- Exacerbated by delayed urination, decongestants, antidepressants, antispasmodic, exposure to cold, consumption of alcohol
