What is the prostate gland?
Largest accessory gland of the male reproductive system
What are the components of the prostate?
Has a glandular component (2/3) and a fibromuscular component (1/3).
has a base/apex/muscular anterior surface
What are the lobes of the prostate?
Has an anterior lobe, posterior lobe, lateral lobe and medial lobe.
what is the blood supply of the prostate?
internal iliac, inferior vesical, internal pudendal, middle rectal
What are the zones of the prostate?
peripheral
central
transition
anterior fibromucular
what does the peripheral zone contain?
Contains apical, posterior, and lateral aspects
What does the central zone contain?
Area from ejaculatory ducts to under bladder base
What does the transition zone contain?
Surrounds urethra proximal to ejaculatory ducts
What does the anterior fibromucular zone contain?
Bladder neck to urethral sphincter
Where is most cancer of the prostate found?
peripheral zone
Where does the second place most cancer is found?
central zone
What is benign prostatic hypertrophy?
enlarged benign growth in the transition zone
gives problems with urination (surrounds urethrae)
