“Although Mines is a very selective university, once you join the community it is not toxically competitive. I am familiar with some other universities where it feels like everyone is competing against one another. At Mines we are interdisciplinary, hands on, collaborative, and we strive to cooperate to solve complex issues.”

“We are a small school in the classroom. Student/Faculty Ration of 16:1. 34 avg, class size and will decrease into 20’s as you get into major. Probably similar to high school class size. We want it to be intimate, but also all classes are taught by professors 97% with industry experience and terminal degrees. “
“One of the most important stats to look at when comparing universities is the First Year Retention Rate. Avg in the USA is 77%; ours 92%.”
“Part of how we maintain a 92% retention is to offer lots of student support services. Academic as well as mental and physical wellbeing offerings including free counseling.”

“We pride ourselves on being a university for folks from all identities and backgrounds. Yes, we have a majority of men, however, our rate of female attendance significantly higher than other comparable institutions. They generally only 25%, Mines has 32% and 35% of our most recent incoming class.”
“We are excited about the rising rates of women in STEM and we are proud that so many women have chosen Mines to be their place of study.”

“If you are admitted to the school, you should have access to the entire academic portfolio. You also don’t have to select a major until the end of your first year. You can combine the majors with minors and areas of specialization (Cyber Security, Aerospace).
Mines is very pro Study Abroad. Nationally only 10% of students at STEM institutions study abroad at Mines that number is 20% (twice the Nat. Avg).

“You also have to find your people, your community. Even though we are smaller, even though we are academically focused, our community matches what you would find at any larger institution. The community at mines is more vibrant than many massive universities.
You will have many opportunities to find your people. We have 250+ clubs and organizations that range from fraternities and sororities, pre professional clubs that allow for networking within the industry, outdoor adventure clubs, even just for fun like charcuterie.
Great Athletics, Dorms that are social.

Slide 24/25: Doing the Math

A

“Last but not least - the investment, paying for school. I’m going to show you some big numbers. Whether you are in state or out of state, nobody has ever uttered Oh Boy Mines was Cheap. But it is an investment.
Direct Costs = money that is paid directly to university (Tuition, Room and Board, Fees). Indirect = Flight home, Gas, books and supplies, personal expenses.
Luckily the vast majority of students get some help in making it affordable. Admissions applications are double examined for admission and merit award. They are renewable - you get it all four years if you stay in good standing. To get to the higher amounts, you need to brag about yourself. It is not being cocky; it is advocating for who you are. This is not the time to be humble, be proud of who you are and let that be known - it is the difference between thousands of dollars sometimes.

“Once you are admitted, then you become eligible for other awards outside of the merit. Only accepted Mines students can apply, another reason to apply early. If you wait until after Nov. 1 to apply, I can’t guarantee you will receive a letter of acceptance in time to apply for additional scholarships. They range from thousands of dollars to full rides.
Otherwise, there are federal grants and loans. FASFA is not required, but it is suggested, because every school hands out money differently. You would get a different package for each university. Goes live Oct. 1 of Senior Year. “

If you invest… you want to see the return. Today there are a lot of convos about whether college is worth it, these figures show that a Mines education is worth it.
1,300 companies actively recruit on campus and that is more than the number of students we graduate in a year. The career fair that just happened is a great example of the companies who are interested in our students. Lockheed Martin, CIA, Ball, etc. “
