Prosocial Behavior Flashcards
Prosocial Behavior
Behaviors with positive social consequences (includes helping and altruism).
Helping
Benefits a person directly
Altruism
Helping without the expectation of receiving a benefit or reward.
Evaluation Apprehension
Fear of looking foolish in front of others, especially in an ambiguous situation; may lead to a lack of response in an emergency.
Diffusion of responsibility
We believe that other people are just as responsible as we are to help.
Cialdini’s Littering Studies
Making a particular norm salient reinforces the norm.
Ex). Seeing one piece of litter in a very clean environment. Can be made salient by someone modeling acounternormative action (ex. littering in an otherwise clean environment)
