Prosdodontics Flashcards
T/F: An I Bar Clasp has a supra-bulge retainer approach
False, I Bar Clasps extends over the mucosa and reaches the bottom 1/3rd of the crown along the long axis of the tooth
When should titanium dentures be considered
When weight and thickness are an issue - they are a lightweight but strong material but expensive to fabricate due to their high melting point
What is Maxillofacial Prosthodontics?
Restoration of stomatognathic (Teeth/Jaw/Soft Tissue) and craniofacial (Head and Neck) structures with prostheses due to serious trauma or head/neck cancers.
This is a specialisation of prosthodontics reserved largely for specialists and work with OMFS.
Why would you consider an acrylic denture over a chrome denture?
When there is higher variability in patient’s tooth and gum health such that dentition and alveolar bone height is more likely to change in the 0-5 year timeframe
Why would you consider an chrome denture over a acrylic denture?
Better physical properties More durable (10 year lifespan)
Under what circumstances is a bounded saddle more likely to be effective?
- When there are teeth on the opposite side
2. When occlusal rests can be achieved
Where does the support for a free end saddle come from?
The mucosa that sits under the free end saddle
Why would a denture design feature a lingual plate?
When it’s likely that the existing dentition will be compromised so the support will come from the lingual mucosa
What is the benefit of a Molloplast Soft Base when designing a full arcylic denture?
It has a silicon rubber based, bonded to the arcylic to provide more comfort to the patient.
When doing an initial patient examination, what criteria need to be assess for a patient’s existing prosthetic?
- Identify the Type: Partial vs Full
- Material: Acrylic, Chrome, Titanium, Gold
- Denture experience of patient: how long, what type?
- Is the patient happy with denture and fit? Fit, Comfort
Function: Speech, Mastication, Appearance - How long with current denture? Where was it made? Condition? Good Design?
What criteria need to be assessed in a new denture after it has been fit?
Appearance
Speech
Retention
Stability: function? Use fingers to attempt to move out of place
Design
Extensions: does it impinge onto soft tissues?
