Proprioception Flashcards
Proprioception
Ability to perceive the position of movement of our body and localize ourselves in space
Mechanoreceptors= proprioceptors
Located in locomotor system
- Muscle spindle receptors: sensitive to stretching
- Golgi tendon organs: tension of tendons
- Joint receptors: signal position of joints
-… in skin and brain signals help the body to sense and predict movement
Importance of proprioception
If nerves are damaged you use the ability to control movement properly,
If vision is also lost you lose sense of the location of your limbs and experience loss of ownership
Info from proprioception
- Automatic responses
- Complex automatic and conscious (usually become integrated with information of other sensory modalities)
- we focus on visuals and lot
Example for different sensory modalities
Rubber hand illusion (RHT)
-Experiment Aufbau
Synchrony of tactile and visual information is the same so they believe the rubber hand is their own hand
Proprioceptive accuracy
The ability to perceive proprioceptive information consciously
Measurable:
-> joint position reproductive test: your body gets moved a certain position and they have to redo the same position with eyes closed
Positively associated with motor performance
Can be improved
Proprioception in psych
Input of it plays a role in emotional experience
- different positions can relate to bigger self confidence
- reduced muscle tension relaxes
