Propositional Logic Part 1 Flashcards
How is logic a science?
It is a science because of systematic approach and because it has truth as it’s object.
What are the first principles?
Principle of identity.
Principle of excluded middle
Principle of sufficient reason
Principle of contradiction
What is the operation of the human mind
Simple apprehension
Judgement
Inferences/reasoning
Explain the previous question?
This is talking about how the human mind operates..
Simple apprehension: Human beings grasp the nature of things and form concepts about them. E.g perceiving a table.
Judgment: whereby concepts relate to another .. we form judgement when terms are related to another by affirmation or denial.
Inferences/Reasoning: we then arrive at the knowledge of the unknown from the knowledge of the known.
Explain the Principle of identity
Principle of identity: this States that a thing is what it is and not another thing.
Explain the Principle of excluded middle.
This States that there is no middle state between being and non being
Explain the Principle of sufficient reason.
This States that there is sufficient reason for everything that exist. Also called the principle of casuality
Explain the Principle of contradiction.
This States that it is impossible for something to be and not be at the same time and same manner.
Why do the first principles dont need demonstration.?
Because they are self evident.
What are the four causes
Material cause.
Efficient cause.
Formal cause.
Final cause.
