Why prophylaxis?
A
Patients may have an underlying cardiac condition that places them at an increased risk for Infective Endocarditis and are undergoing a procedure that carries a risk of transient bacteremia due to an organism that causes Bacterial Endocarditis.

When is prophylaxis recommended (High Risk cases)?
A
Prosthetic valve
Previous IE
Cyanotic Heart Disease - eg. Tetralogy of Fallot
Rheumatic Heart Disease (already existing)
*Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy with high gradients - severe
*Mitral Valve Prolapse with regurgitation or thickened leaflets
