Properties of metals and Alloys Flashcards
What are the three basic properties that most metals have?
Strong, bendy, great conductors.
Copper is a great conductor of electricity, so what is it commonly used for?
Electrical wiring.
What properties of aluminium make it good for aeroplanes?
Corrosion-resistant
Forms strong alloys
Bendy
What properties of titanium make it suitable for hip replacements?
Corrosion-resistant
Light
Very strong
What are three different properties of…
1) Low carbon steel
2) High carbon steel
3) Stainless steel
1) Easily shaped
2) Very hard, inflexible
3) Corrosion-resistant
Why are alloys harder than pure metals?
Different elements have different sized atoms so when they are added to one another, the smaller atom will upset the other atom making it more difficult for them to slide over each other. so alloys are harder.
