How is oil extracted from plants and seeds?
A
Its crushed and pressed between metal plates which squashes the oil out.

What property of vegetable oils makes them suitable as fuels?
A
They have lots of energy.

Oils are either saturated or unsaturated. How could you test for saturation?
A
An unsaturated oil will decolourise bromine water, so you add the oil to bromine water to test it’s saturation.

How can vegetable oils be hardened?
A
Through hydrogenation.

What does the process of hydrogenation involve?
A
The vegetable oil is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst at about 60c and the hydrogen reacts with the double-bonded carbons and opens out the double bond.
