Atoms and Elements Flashcards
What does the nucleus contain?
Protons and neutrons.
Where are the electrons in a atom?
occupying shells around the nucleus.
What are the charges of protons, neutrons and electrons?
Protons are positively charged
Neutrons are neutral
Electrons are negatively charged
If a atom has 16 protons how many electrons does it have and why?
It has 16 electrons because the number of protons also equals the number of electrons (they’re the same amount)
How many electrons can fit in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd shells of an atom
1st = 2 2nd = 8 3rd = 8
Why do atoms react?
Atoms react because they want to have a full outer shell, like noble gases. So they react with other atoms to try to fill their outer shell.
If magnesium has a proton number of 12, it has 12 electrons. So what’s it’s electronic structure?
2,8,2
If potassium has a proton number of 19, it has 19 electrons. So what’s it’s electronic structure?
2,8,8,1
Approximately how many atoms are found naturally on earth?
100
