Q

How is it that the hydrocarbons keep their original properties?

A

Because crude oil is a mixture it means that there are no chemical bonds between the hydrocarbons and so they keep their original properties.

Q

How does fractional distillation work?

A

Heated crude oil is piped into the fractional column and the vaporised oil rises up the column and the various fractions are tapped off at the different levels at which they condense.
