Crude oil and fractional distillation Flashcards
1
Q
What is crude oil?
A
A mixture of hydrocarbons
2
Q
How is it that the hydrocarbons keep their original properties?
A
Because crude oil is a mixture it means that there are no chemical bonds between the hydrocarbons and so they keep their original properties.
3
Q
What method is used to separate the hydrocarbons?
A
Fractional distillation
4
Q
How does fractional distillation work?
A
Heated crude oil is piped into the fractional column and the vaporised oil rises up the column and the various fractions are tapped off at the different levels at which they condense.
5
Q
The lower the condensing the temperature the ______ up the column the hydrocarbon is tapped off.
A
Higher.
