Properties Of Metals Flashcards
What are the basic properties of a metal?
They are strong but can be bent or hammered into different shapes
They’re good conductors of heat and electricity
Why do these properties make them useful?
Strength makes them good for car bodies
Heat conductor makes them good for saucepans
Electricity conductor makes them good for electrical wires
What are the properties of copper?
A good conductor of electricity (ideal for electrical wires)
It’s hard and strong but can be bent
It doesn’t react with water
What are the properties of aluminium?
Corrosion-resistant
Low density
Pure aluminium isn’t that strong but forms hard strong alloys
What are the properties of titanium?
Low density metal
Very strong
Corrosion resistant
What is a use of copper?
Plumbing because it can be bent to make pipes and it’s below hydrogen in reactivity so doesn’t react with water
What is a use of aluminium?
Making aeroplanes because it’s a bit strong and can be bent into shape but it also needs to be light
What is a use of titanium?
Replacement hips because it has to be non corrosive, light and not too bendy
What is a disadvantage of metals?
Some corrode when exposed to air and water so they need to be protected, if they corrode they lose their strength and hardness
What is metal fatigue?
When stresses and strains are repeatedly put on a metal it’s known as metal fatigue and leads to the break down of the metal which can be dangerous
